A few words about Mount Athos or Holy Mount
The peninsula of Mount Athos is the easternmost of the three separate parallel peninsulas (Kassandra, Sithonia (central), and Mount Athos or Mount Athos) that together make up the Halkidiki peninsula.
It is 60 km long, 8 to 12 km wide and covers an area of about 360 sq.km.
This peninsula is covered by Mount Athos, 2033m high, hence its name, and ends at Cape Akrothon.
Between the peninsula of Mount Athos and Sithonia is the Siggitikos gulf.
Mount Athos is a self-governing part of the Greek State, located on the peninsula of Mount Athos in Halkidiki, Macedonia.
It includes twenty Holy Monasteries, many hermitages and small shipyards -ports as well as various shops and services.
It is unofficially characterized as an “Autonomous Monastic State”.
